A Love which Dies
Tuesday Apr 30, 2019
Tuesday Apr 30, 2019
This Easter we get a chance to consider the great love that God has for each one of us. A love that died on a cross and rose again to call us into an intimate fellowship with a God that loved us from all eternity and was consumed with each of us and our wellbeing even when we were lost in sin.

After going through Lent and experiencing the blessing of Easter for the past 8 days we now come to the end of our review of the gospel. And, thereby, we come to ponder one more question, what is the goal or purpose for all of this? The answer is simply that we be a waste for the Lord.

Do you have an open hand to help or a closed fist? Today with certain political issues we are asked this question in various ways. Do we act in mercy or do we hold up a barrier that prevents to mercy of God to be known through us?

Do you know him?

When it comes to the basis or our Christian testimony there is only one issue that should be the bedrock on which we are believers. We should know Him. Nothing else matters but whether or not we really do know the Christ that we serve.

In today's first reading the apostles were asked, "by whose authority do you do what you do?" This question was asked of Jesus when he went about preaching and doing good, and it is also asked of us.
Authority is a huge issue that shows whether or not we accept or reject salvation. And, it is important that we understand whose name we do something. Is it our own or Christ's?

As we continue our celebration of the Resurrection with the continued remembrance of Easter, we come to a reminder of just how this event is something that the gospel is based on. We are granted the ability to be forgiven if we cooperate with grace, a grace we do not merit but must accept. This is the repentance that is preached in the name of Christ.

Today's Gospel reading has a funny moment in it. A moment of two blind men seeking to teach Jesus about His death and resurrection when they walked with Him on the road to Emmaus. It is funny because they were the ones who did not know something. A something that was revealed when Jesus completed a Mass and gave Him his body and blood.

Today's mass readings continue our celebration of the resurrection by pointing us to the future blessing of Pentecost. The giving of the gift of the Holy Spirit. For in the gospel we are told that Jesus must ascend to heaven, as He declared on the night he was betrayed, so that He could send another Paraclete. The result is what Peter called in Acts, the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Easter Monday 2019

We are right now in the 8 days of the Easter Event. Much like the Feast of Unleavend Bread or of Tabernacles are 8 day long feasts in Judaism, Easter is something that is an 8-day long remembrance of the Resurrection and not just one Sunday of Easter baskets and candy.
We recall that Jesus is alive. This is our testimony. A testimony that is at odds with the message of the world. A message that is contrasted in the gospel reading today.

Happy Easter. Christ is risen. Risen indeed!
But, what does that really mean for you? Does that mean something special or is it just a historical thing that has no personal meaning to you? Does the fact that Jesus rose from the dead impact your life and mean something? Or is it just an event that happened that changes nothing in your life?
Jesus has risen from the dead. Is he meaningful in your life? Is this resurrection a reality of God with you? Among us? In your life? Or a detached thing that has no real impact on who and what you are?
