Pentecost 2019
Sunday Jun 09, 2019
Sunday Jun 09, 2019
The Holy Spirit is given, Alleluia.
Today is the day in which we received the greatest gift of all, God Himself. He is not a babe in a manger, or a man walking next to us as we journey through life. He is no longer on a cross or laying in a tomb. It is not that He has risen and abides with us still externally. But, rather, He is in us. We are His temple. His dwelling-place.

Vigil of Pentecost 2019
Saturday Jun 08, 2019
Saturday Jun 08, 2019
Tonight we have an added bonus, the readings for the Vigil of Pentecost. For in the churches around the world tonight is a setup, a preparation for the great event of the coming of the Holy Spirit.
We do not always eagerly want this event like that of Christmas, because there are no presents; nor do we receive baskets of candy like on Easter. But, this day marks out the greatest blessing of all that we can receive, God Himself as a personal indwelling Spirit.

Necessary Adaptations
Saturday Jun 08, 2019
Saturday Jun 08, 2019
As we close out the prologue section of the catechism we realize the need to adapt the teachings within it to the various audiences that will encounter these truths. For even though there is one truth that we want all to come to understand, namely that God is love, not all of us will understand that love in the same way.

The nuts and Bolts

My Uncle Jim was a bit of a tinkerer. He would take things apart and try to put them back together in order to understand just how they work. And when dealing with the Catechism of the Catholic Church we need to understand the various parts that make it up in order to know how to properly use it when learning about the Catholic Faith.

To Whom?

When we study the Catechism of the Catholic Church it is very helpful if we consider to whom that document was addressed to in order to know how we might find it useful. For the people to whom this document is primarily addressed to are the Bishops throughout the world. They are the ones who are responsible for making sure that the Catholic faith is passed on to future generations as accurately as possible. And, it is through them that all others, including you and me, are able to know the deposit of the faith that is our heirloom from Christ.

Our Christian Heirloom
Wednesday Jun 05, 2019
Wednesday Jun 05, 2019
In many families, there is something precious that gets passed down from generation to generation. It can be a set of grandma's dishes, some coins that grandpa collected, an old shotgun or even a ring or some other item like these. When I was younger I used to joke about how my hand me down clothes were the only heirloom my family had.
But, regardless of all these things, it points to something that is very important that we are entrusted with and pass on to the next generation so they can have what was given to us.
In the Christian faith, our heirloom is simply defined as catechesis. It is simply the transmission of the faith from one generation unto the next. It is that thing that unites us with the past. It is the Tradition we share in common that allows us to know we have roots.

Why The Gospel?
Tuesday Jun 04, 2019
Tuesday Jun 04, 2019
One of the most basic questions in Christianity is, why did Jesus die for me? For most people, this is a question that has many answers. But the essential answer to this simple question is found in the opening line of the catechism. God wants to share his life with us.
The reason for our salvation from sin is because God did not create any of us for hell. God wants all of us to come to the saving knowledge of Him and live with Him eternally.

Why the Catechism?

Monday Jun 03, 2019
Today we will be beginning a journey through the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The reason for this is so that we can really know what it is that has been taught throughout the centuries and received as the faith that was once given to the saints (Jude 1:3-4).

Seventh Sunday of Easter 2019

In today's readings, we are taught something about being a united people. We are called to be one loaf or one Church or Body of Christ, not many denominations. The saddest thing in the world is the fact that there are many different types of Christian Churches. There are Baptists, Presbyterians, Methodist, non-denominational, etc.
This is not the unity that we find in the readings today. For today we are told that we ought to be one, as the Trinity is one. We ought to be united with one another and cry out, "Come Lord Jesus." Like the Spirit and the Bride, we ought to be one.

What Love Teaches
Saturday Jun 01, 2019

Over the last couple of weeks, I talked about the importance of properly loving God. The one thing that I hope you gained from all these talks is that in properly loving God we become the kind of people we were always meant by His love to become.
Too often we focus our lives on things that can never satisfy us or make us eternally happy. But, if we love God properly we can be kind, patient, endure all manner of hardships and never stop believing or enduring for the God we love.
