Typically when someone responds to an "altar call" or says the "sinner's prayer" in a protestant church, what they are doing is simply confessing their faith in a creed. This formula of declaring faith has always been part of Christianity can is the reason why we have creeds in the first place. The two most prominent creeds in Christianity are the apostles' creed and the Nicene Creed. Both form the basis of a summary of the deposit of the faith and are a basis for learning more about the faith that we as Catholic Christians profess for our salvation.
