Easter Vigil 2019
Saturday Apr 20, 2019
Saturday Apr 20, 2019
After a period of silence that started with the end of the Good Friday service comes the Easter Vigil mass. For many, this period is silent because there is no mass said between the end of Holy Thursday and the Easter Vigil and they believe that for over 24 hours there was no "daily sacrifice." But they are wrong. All that has transpired since the Mass of the Lord's Supper until the Easter Vigil is the sacrifice of the Mass. That is why these services make up what Catholic tradition calls the Triduum.
And, it is here in the beginning of the Easter Season with the Vigil Mass that we conclude the Mass of the Lord's Supper. We conclude it with the capstone of Christianity, the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus. We do this because this one event is part of ever mass and liturgy. We do this because it is the basis for everything we now are.
To help us see that the Church gives us an abundance of readings to point us back to the gospel and see how far the Lord has brought us. And, with that, we now reflect and ponder the gospel. We see in the death, burial, and resurrection the full gospel and our part in. And, here, today we renew ourselves to this new life of relationship with our God.

What is the point of Suffering? Why do bad things happen? The simple answer is that such things are the result of sin. But, the larger answer points to suffering not being something that wins. There is no termination of things in loss or misfortune. All things work toward a greater good when you are united with God. This is the heart and soul of the gospel message. It is the message hidden in the cross.

Bearing the Cross

Throughout Lent, we looked at various parts of the gospel and examined just how we are to live out in a relationship with the gospel. Today we come to reflect on the meaning of the cross and how we are crcified with Christ. All of our lives are to be marked by this one thing .... that we are crucified with Christ. This is where our Lenten journey begins and ends. It begins with self-denial in giving up something, but ultimately it becomes a true expression of our lives that we live for others and not to please ourselves.

Our Sin Nature and the Cross
Tuesday Apr 16, 2019
Tuesday Apr 16, 2019
Why was the Cross necessary for our salvation? The easiest answer to this question is to point out that it corrects what is wrong in how we became corrupted by sin. The cross is the place where we die to self and the natural weakness toward sin that is built into our nature as a result of sin.
Much like eating too many sweets can produce diabetes and smoking can cause lung cancer, sin causes our nature to be weakened ad crave a sinful thing. The cross is that surgeon scalpel to remove that from us and make our eternity a return to purity.

Have you ever felt like you were meant to be part of something greater than you? Most of us feel the need to be part of a greater society or click. We like to have millions of Facebook friends and popularity is something we crave deep down inside.
All of this is something that God stirs in us so that we can see how we fit in His plan for our lives as members of the one body of Christ.

Walking After the Spirit

When we know that we have died and been raised to a newness of life in Baptism, we learn the lesson of the Early Church Fathers who taught a gospel message based on a Divine Exchange. We are crucified with Christ (Gal 2:2o) and as a result, we now taste divine things (Hebrews 6:4; 2 Peter 1:3). Learning to cooperate with grace is the key to our being branches on the divine vine of Christ. It is how we live saintly, holy lives. It is the key to everything that we are called to be as born again new creatures in Christ.

The Body of this Death
Friday Apr 12, 2019
Friday Apr 12, 2019
Death is the way of freedom from both sin and our sin nature (concupiscence). In both, we need to see the answer on a cross. For freedom from sin, or forgiveness, we find the blood of Christ testifying to His death for our pardon and purchase of freedom. In freedom from our sin nature, the cross is still the cross of Christ, but one in which we are crucified on as well. For we must die to sin in order to be freed from it.
